Nel secolo XIX la
sensibilità per le questioni sociali era
già viva con il crearsi di forze associative che
precedettero in Italia il movimento sindacale operaio
moderno.Anche in campo cattolico, anteriormente alla "Rerum novarum" del 15 maggio 1891, il pensiero sociale era vivo ancorché non fosse onorato da azioni pratiche. Tuttavia, limitatamente a iniziative locali, erano sorte le "Società di Mutuo Soccorso". Giaveno, piccola capitale della Val Sangone, già dal 1873 poté garantire ai lavoratori dipendenti un'ampia assistenza tramite l'Unione Operaia Cattolica, nata dall'impegno sociale del Can. Bartolomeo Rolla e del cugino Giuseppe, i quali dettero vita ad opere sociali nella cittadina che il torrente Sangone, forza motrice del tempo, aveva reso operosa con molti stabilimenti. Nacquero così la Cooperativa di Consumo, l'Unione Operaia Cattolica e la Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. Successivamente, sull'onda del messaggio della "Rerum novarum", un altro sacerdote, il can. Pio Rolla , nipote di Bartolomeo, fondava dal 1907 al 1924 ben trentuno altre opere sociali, ciascuna mirata a un particolare e necessario servizio.

In seno ed a fianco dell'Unione Operaia Cattolica
sorse nel 1886, fondata con statuto proprio dal Can. Bartolomeo
Rolla e dal fratello Costantino, la Banda Musicale
Operaia Cattolica, che fu fin dall'inizio il
riferimento visibile, il distintivo musicale in cui si
riconoscevano rappresentate tutte le altre opere. Nel
1903 S.S. Papa Leone XIII, poco prima della Sua morte
avvenuta nell'estate di quell'anno, venuto a conoscenza
dei meriti sociale del Can. Bartolomeo
Rolla , lo insigniva della croce "Pro ecclesia et
Pontifice", istituita proprio per coloro che si
distinguevano nell'azione sociale cattolica. Fu
così che la Banda Musicale Operaia Cattolica
divenne a furor di popolo Banda Musicale Leone XIII. Da
allora una vasta raccolta giornalistica tratta dalle
testate locali documenta anno dopo anno l'intensa vita
della "Leone" in manifestazioni civili e religiose, con
particolare dedizione al servizio della Parrocchia di
San Lorenzo Martire in occasione delle feste liturgiche
più importanti.

Nei suoi oltre 100 anni di vita la "Leone" ha
anche conosciuto momenti di particolare
difficoltà, come negli anni delle due guerre .
Fu perseguitata accanitamente dal Fascismo e fu
soppressa d'autorità il 23 giugno del 1939 per
l'avversione del Fascio locale a cui il direttore della
banda di quel periodo, il Can. Pio Rolla , non volle
piegarsi, sostenuto concordemente dai suoi musici.
L'attività musicale continuò, utilizzando
il nome di La Ceciliana, all'interno dell'oratorio
maschile della Parrocchia. Alla caduta del Fascismo il
gruppo tornò libero nella sua sede sociale
dell'Opera Sacro Cuore. Il 25 aprile 1945, la sera
stessa della Liberazione, i Musici espressero con un
pubblico concerto tutta la loro gioia per la
libertà riconquistata.Poi c'è la storia recente, non sempre piana e lieta. Negli 1975 e '76 la "Leone" perse molti dei suoi elementi, confluiti nell'altra banda di Giaveno, la Banda Comunale di Giaveno e Valsangone. Nel 1979 nasce il gruppo di majorettes "Les Mascottes", che da allora accompagna la Banda Leone nelle sue esibizioni e che ha nel tempo evoluto il suo modo di presentarsi arrivando ad essere un apprezzato gruppo sportivo per la pratica del twirling. Oggi la "Leone" è una banda musicale solida nella sua tradizione, forte per il suo valore musicale sotto la direzione del Maestro Aldo Bunino , che ne è a capo da più di vent'anni. E' una banda giovane (l'età media non supera i trent'anni) che si propone ai giovani per continuare ad accompagnare ed a riflettere in sé l'avvicendarsi della Storia giavenese. Appartiene alle Opere Parrocchiali della Parrocchia San Lorenzo martire, ha uno statuto regolarmente depositato ed è iscritta come Associazione Banda Musicale "Leone XIII" nelle Associazioni di Volontariato della Provincia di Torino e della Regione Piemonte.
In the XIX century the
sensibility for the social problems was already alive
with the creating of associations that preceded, in
Italy, the modern trade unions.In the catholic field, before the encyclical "Rerum novarum", dated may 15 th 1891, the social thinks was already alive even if it was not yet honoured with practical facts. However, on a local basis, borned the "Società di Mutuo Soccorso" (mutual aid association). Giaveno, small Val Sangone's ( from the name of the river - note of the translator )capital, since 1873 was able to give the workers a wide assistance with the "Unione Operaia Catolica" (the catholic workers union), borned from the social engagement of the parish Can. Bartolomeo Rolla and of his cousin Giuseppe, who set alive social deeds in the small city, where the river Sangone, the motive power in those times, has brought jobs with a lot of factories. That way borned the "Cooperativa di Consumo" (consumer's cooperative), "l'Unione Operaia Cattolica" (the catholic workers union) and the "Cassa Depositi e Prestiti" (savings and loans board). Following the wawe of the "Rerum novarum", another priest, the parrish can. Pio Rolla , Bartolomeo's nephew, founded from 1907 to 1924, thirtyone social deeds, each one aimed at a peculiar and necessary service.
Inside and aside of the Unione Operaia Cattolica was founded in the 1886, with its own status, by the Canon Bartolomeo Rolla and by his brother Costantino, the "Banda Musicale Operaia Cattolica" (the musical catholic workers' band) , wich was from the very begining the musical distinctive sign, in wich all the other deeds reconized themself. In 1903 Pope Leone XIII, a little time before he passed away during this year's summer, went to know the social merits of the Canon Bartolomeo Rolla , assigned him the "Pro ecclesia et Pontifice" cross, set especially for those who distinguished themselves in the catholic social action. It's how the musical catholic workers' band became by popular acclaim the band Leone XIII. From then a broad jounalistic collection based on the local newspapers documents the high activity of the "Leone" in civils and religious manifestations, with a paricular regard to the services of the Collegiate "San Lorenzo Martire" for the most important liturgical fests. During its hundred years and more of life the "Leone" knew moments of particular dificulties, as during the years between the two world wars. It has been grimly pursued by the Fascism. It has, even, been cancelled, on June 23 rd 1939, by the local facists because the band chairman, Can. Pio Rolla , didn't want to bend at, sustained in this way by the musicians. The activity, however, went on inside of parish men's oratory, using the name "La Ceciliana" ( from the name of Saint Cecilia - holly patron of musicians - note of the translator ). When the Facism went down, the group was set free to return to its natural quarters: "l'Opera del Sacro Cuore". On the very evening of the Liberation, April 25 th 1945, the musicians expressed with a public concert all their joy for the regained liberty.
Then comes the recent history, not always happy and easy. During the years 1975 and 1976 the "Leone" lost quite a lot of its musicians who flown in the other band: the Comunal Band of Giaveno and Val Sangone. In 1979 borns the Majorettes group "Les Mascottes". From this moment they come along with the Band during its exhibitions. During the time they evolved in their way to present themselves, becoming an appreciated sport group for the twirling practice.

Nowadays the "Leone" is a musical band goodly tied to
its tradition, strong of its own musical value under
the direction Maestro Aldo
Bunino who leads it since more than twenty years.
Its a young band (the average age is hardly over the
thirty years) which present it self to the youths to go
on to escort and to think about our comunity history.
It belongs to the parish's body of work of the Parish
San Lorenzo Martire, it has its own statute regularly
layed down and it is registered as "Associazione Banda
Musicale Leone XII" in the lis of the voluntary
associations of the Turin province and Piedmont region.
