C'è chi nella Leone ha trascorso moltissimi anni della sua vita. L'affermazione non è riservata ad uno sparuto gruppetto ma ad almeno una ventina di persone, tra le quali si può annoverare sicuramente Giovanni Merlo Nanot.
La passione per la musica, sicuramente, ma anche un profondo senso del sociale, un attaccamento a quei valori forti della fede che si deve poi trasformare in impegno, il forte senso di identità di gruppo, hanno fatto sì che quest'uomo dedicasse la sua vita alla "musi-ca": alla banda Leone XIII.
Nato nel 1913, entrò giovanissimo in banda suonando il basso; l'amore per la musica lo spinse a diplomarsi maestro di solfeggio cosicché divenne presto la spalla del maestro della banda il Sig. Maresciallo Iori, dal quale ebbe l'incarico di preparare gli allievi.
Nel 1938 si rifiutò di entrare a far parte della "Banda Civica", costituita dal fascio locale. Il suo nome, assieme a quello di Michele Deirino e Antonio Giai Via, figurò in un'ordinanza, affissa all'Albo Municipale, nella quale i tre musici della Leone venivano privati della Tessera Fascista.
Il 29 luglio 1938 era tra le file della banda quando, di ritorno dalla celebrazione religiosa di S. Giacomo alla frazione Sala, il presidente Deirino, contravvenendo agli ordini del podestà tendenti a boicottare in tutti i modi la Leone XIII a favore della banda fascista e che ne aveva vietato ogni esibizione al di fuori dei servizi religiosi, spinto dalla voglia di suonare dei musici diede il via all'esecuzione di una marcia.
La banda Leone XIII fu sciolta ma non annientata. I musici continuarono a suonare in clandestinità, all'oratorio S. Luigi, e qui Giovanni Merlo Nanot, spronato da Don Foco, ricostruì la formazione bandistica, che venne chiamata "La Ceciliana" e dotata di uno statuto e di un regolamento nel febbraio del 1940. Suonarono pubblicamente solo in occasione di funzioni religiose, ma suonarono.
Il 28 agosto 1943 la Leone XIII fu riabilitata ed il 25 aprile 1945, sotto la sua direzione, tenne un gran concerto di "liberazione".
Fu maestro instancabile finché una grave malattia lo costrinse nel 1970 ad abbandonare l'attività, ma non lasciò mai la sua banda a cui fu sempre attaccato fino alla morte.
La Leone XIII non lo dimentica.

There is someone that spend many years of his life in the Leone. This is not reserved to a few, but it can apply to a least a twenty persons, in this lot you can surely count Giovanni Merlo Nanot.
His passion for music, sure, but his profond sense of social resposability, a profound sense of the faith that push some to transform it in duty, in a strong sense of indentity in a group made so that the man dedicated his life to music, to the Band Leone XIII.
Borned in 1913, he begun to play the wind bass, his love for music leaded him to graduate as a maestro of solfeggio so he became fastly the help of the band conductor, Mr. Maresciallo Iori, from who he received the duty of forming the pupils.
In 1938 he denied the invitation of playibg in the "Civic band" set up by the local fascists. His name, with those of Michele Deirino and Antonio Giai Via, was made of public shame in an order where they were stripped of their Facist card.
On the 29th of July 1938 he was in the band when, while coming back from a religious fest, the president Deirino, going against the order of the "podestà", whose goal was to boycott in every way the Leone in favour of the fascist band had forbid the playing outside of religoious functions. The president Deirino, full of the will to play, gave the order to play a march.
The Leone was the dissolved biut it was not finished. The musicians went on to play in clandestinity at the oratorio Saint Luigi, there Giovianni Merlo Nanot urged by the parish Foco, set up a band, called "La Ceciliana", it was given to it a status and official rules in Febbruary 1940. They were allow to play in public only in reigious functions, but they played.
On August 28, 1943 the Leone was rehabilitated. On April 25th, 1945, the band held a concert for the liberation.
Giovanni Merlo Nanot has been an untirable conductor untill in the 1970 a major illness obliged him to retire, but he never leaved his band untill he passed his way.
The band Leone XIII do not forget him.
